SKELETON POSTMARKS of SURREY

A Skeleton postmark is a circular datestamp made up from loose metal type, like a John Bull printing set. Skeletons are brought into use, usually for a short period, then returned to 'the PO stores' for reuse. The reasons for their issue is usually one of the following:

A)   Summer peak periods at holiday resorts.

B)   Theft of a datestamp.

C)   Temporary post office.

D)   New post office.

E)   Pre-Christmas pressure period.

D)   Normal datestamp is being replaced due to:  break-age - loss - wear
